By Carolyn LivengoodSan Mateo County TimesThe public is invited to attend “An Evening With Doris Buffett,” the philanthropic sister of billionaire Warren Buffett, from 6 to 8 p.m. March 31 at the San Mateo County History Museum, 2200 Broadway St. in Redwood City.Proceeds from the reception will benefit Caminar and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) San Mateo County, both located in San Mateo. Ted Robinson is master of ceremonies.Founded in 1968, Caminar helps people with mental illness in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to become independent and self-sufficient.NAMI, established in 1974, is also dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, education and advocacy. A special video, created by Warren Buffett, will introduce his older sister, whose biography, “Giving It All Away: The Doris Buffett Story,” was recently published. Because she and her brother grew up with a mother who had mental illness, they are aware of the impact mental illness has on families.Michael Zitz, author of Doris’ biography, interviewed her about her fascinating life, growing up with Warren, and the Sunshine Lady Foundation she founded in 1996 to invest funds in organizations and programs that help disadvantaged people. To date, the foundation has donated $100 million, and Doris reveals in her book how she plans to give away all her money through her foundation before she dies. She still personally chooses thegrant recipients.The event costs $150 per person and includes an autographed book, hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.
